The Waltz Lesson

A 10 track swing single (52m 13s) — released September 21st 2009 on Les Cousins

Les Cousins is pleased to announce this new recording by legendary American finger-style guitarist Duck Baker, whose recording career spans over three decades, including 22 solo records and collaborations with the world greatest guitarists including Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, John Renbourn , Stefan Grossman, Bob Brozman, Diz Disley, John James and Martin Simpson. Duck Baker has been cited as one of the most accomplished, original, and influential international guitar voices of his generation, equally at home playing solo or with other musicians in an amazing variety of musical idioms. The Waltz Lesson features Duck's jazz trio, with clarinetist Alex Ward and bassist Joe Williamson. This has been Baker's working group for the last few years in London, and the focus here is on his original compositions. Although decidedly modern, the style is quite listener-friendly, emphasizing the trio's unique sound and the writing rather than extended improvisations, though both Ward and Baker show themselves to be challenging, quirky soloists. The Waltz Lesson solidifies Baker's unique position in the world of jazz guitar, which was first noted with his highly regarded record Spinning Song back in 1997. This release will be backed by 12 months of guitar lessons and videos based on "Roots and Branches of American Music" in Acoustic Magazine published by Oyster House Media Ltd and a full career retrospective piece. Duck is scheduled to appear on the Mike Harding show on R2 and Late Junction on R3 in the fall. This release will be supported by a full tour of the UK in spring 2010. This is the second of 2 CDs to be released in consecutive weeks. Reviews "He plays the delicate pieces gently and fluidly, making the music sound as if it were written for the guitar: he bends strings, slides notes and rings minor flamenco chords." Ben Ratliff, The New York Times "Quite simply, Duck Baker is the premier American fingerstyle guitarist." - Sing Out "He can go from the Mississippi Delta to the rings of Saturn" - The Village Voice
