Mark Pavey

A 10 track new folk single (36m 25s) — released November 23rd 2009 on Les Cousins

Les Cousins Records will release the self-titled debut from singer/songwriter Mark Pavey on 9 November, followed by the single Brothers on 23 November. Hailing from North Wales via Oxford and London, Mark Pavey is steadily becoming a word of mouth success story. In 2004 he set up his own music company which aimed to promote and explore the music of the sixties folk revival based on the ideals of the famous sixties Soho folk cellar. Pavey met the legendary Davy Graham in 2005 and dedicated three years to managing and producing the great man. They toured together for two years and Pavey produced Graham's last studio album, 2007's "Broken Biscuits". The sudden loss of his friend and teacher Graham to in December 2008 urged him to complete his own self-titled album. As well as being a songwriter creating lyrics that have a life-as-lived quality Pavey learnt the subtle art of song collection and arrangement from his mentor Graham. He is adept at taking the older song forms and adapting their lyrics and melodies to a contemporary context. This sense of modernity is increased by the contribution of drummer Laurence Colbert (RIDE) to the record and demonstrated by the inclusion of the Bert Jansch penned track "High Days" on the album. Pavey's live shows are a mixture of his own material and the guitar playing and singing he learnt from Graham. Whilst many young guitarists claim Graham's influence, Pavey is unique amongst them in having learnt directly from him.

Pavey's guitar is very delicate and not showy, which is not to say that it is at all amateur, simply prefectly measured and applied, and forms a beautiful accompaniment to Pavey's delicious voice. Firmly rooted in the folk genre and given a fresh twist - Kate Lewis - Acoustic Mag
